Camera strap for Leica M
Let’s face it: the original strap that comes with a Leica is just ugly. Actually there is no need for Leica to even give it with the camera as no one is using it anyway. Contrary to the included camera straps with a Canon or Nikon DSLR most users of Leica or Fuji cameras are replacing the included strap.I think they are especially looking for one that suits their own handling and design requirements.
In the beginning I was using my camera without a neck or wrist strap at all. If I was using it I just had it placed in my hands, if I was not using it the camera was resting inside my bag. It took me a while to find a wrist and a neck strap that lived up to what I expected of them. And of course to find a design that I liked, after all I am a design hedonist.
Barber Shop “Razor Cut” wrist strap
I first got the “Razor Cut” wrist strap by Barber Shop Bags and just fell in love with it. It is handmade from leather in Italy and thus perfectly fits to the Leica look. In case you would drop your camera the loop design automatically tightens on your wrist and will prevent a drop to the ground. It is still comfortable enough that you do not even recognise it while shooting.
Peak Design “Slide Lite Ash” neck strap
As nice as the wrist strap is: you are constantly holding a weight of at least 800g in your hand. Sometimes it is just nice to have both hands free and have that weight around your neck. For this I got myself the “Slide Lite Ash” neck strap by Peak Design. This strap is made from a seatbelt-style nylon webbing, is highly adjustable and can be used as a neck or sling strap. Due to the connector system – some flat round plastic heads – the strap can also be detached from the camera really fast. There is also a wrist strap available that uses the same connector system and is an ideal companion (but no option for me to replace the leather wrist strap). It has some small leather details and the quick-pull adjusters can be locked in position after finding the perfect length.
